Onycholysis treatment at home

Onycholysis is a lifting of the nail plate away from the skin beneath it. The loose portion does not reattach; improvement comes as new nail grows forward. Triggers can include repeated wet work, minor injury, irritating products, skin conditions, or infection. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause. Fungal infection and nail psoriasis are two possibilities to discuss with a clinician.

Trim only the detached edge with clean clippers, without pulling or digging underneath. Keep the nail and surrounding skin dry after washing, wear gloves for prolonged water or cleaning exposure, and avoid nail polish, artificial nails, harsh removers, and tight footwear. Do not share clippers, and clean them after use. A small dressing can shield a tender edge if it does not trap moisture. Do not start antifungal or steroid treatment based only on appearance; the right treatment depends on the cause.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if separation is spreading, returns, affects several nails, or does not settle as the nail grows. Seek prompt care for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, bleeding, a darkening band, or redness extending into the finger or toe. People with diabetes, reduced circulation, or a weakened immune system should seek advice early when the skin is broken or inflamed.

Ask whether the pattern suggests infection, psoriasis, trauma, or product irritation; whether a nail sample is needed; which products should be stopped; and how to protect the nail while it grows. Ask what change would require an earlier review.
