Onset of strep throat: what to know

Strep throat is an infection caused by streptococcal bacteria affecting the throat. People may notice a rapidly worsening sore throat, fever, red or swollen tonsils, painful swallowing, and tender glands in the neck. Some children also have nausea, vomiting, or a headache. Cough, runny nose, or hoarseness can point toward a viral illness instead, but symptoms alone cannot reliably separate every cause.

Tonsillitis describes inflamed tonsils and can be caused by several infections. A GP consultation can help decide whether an examination or throat test is appropriate.

Rest, drink fluids, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Follow the label or a clinician’s instructions for suitable pain or fever relief, considering age, pregnancy, allergies, and other medicines. Avoid sharing cups, utensils, or toothbrushes while ill, and wash hands regularly. If strep throat is confirmed, take antibiotic treatment exactly as prescribed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes it.

Arrange prompt assessment for a severe sore throat, high or persistent fever, worsening symptoms, or difficulty swallowing. Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat swelling, or difficulty opening the mouth. These signs may indicate an airway problem or a collection beside a tonsil.
