Short answer

Postpartum depression can begin during pregnancy or after birth, and persistent low mood deserves timely support.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What onset can look like

Symptoms may appear gradually or feel sudden. Low mood after birth can include sadness, emptiness, irritability, guilt, loss of interest, anxiety, poor concentration, or difficulty bonding. Sleep disruption is common after having a baby, but depression may continue even when the baby is resting. Changes in appetite, low energy, and reduced sexual interest can also occur. These experiences are medical symptoms, not a sign that someone is a bad parent.

Hormonal shifts, physical recovery, feeding difficulties, limited sleep, pain, and a lack of practical support may all add strain. Postpartum depression can affect a parent who expected to feel happy, and it can occur after any pregnancy outcome.

What you can do now

Tell a trusted person what you have noticed and arrange an assessment with a doctor, midwife, or mental-health professional. Write down when symptoms started, how often they occur, sleep and appetite changes, and any frightening thoughts. Support may include talking therapy, practical help, and medication chosen with attention to feeding plans and medical history. Small measures such as regular food, hydration, rest arranged by another adult, and brief time outside can support recovery while professional care is arranged.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent help now if you may harm yourself or the baby, cannot stay safe, hear or see things others do not, feel unusually confused, or have extreme agitation or very little need for sleep. Postpartum psychosis is an emergency and needs immediate assessment. If symptoms are persistent, worsening, or interfering with feeding, sleep, bonding, or daily tasks, contact a healthcare professional promptly even without an immediate safety concern.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Could these symptoms be postpartum depression or another condition? What support is available locally? Which treatments fit my health and feeding plans? How can my partner or family help with night-time care? What warning signs mean I should seek emergency help?

Questions people ask

Can postpartum depression start later after birth?

Yes. Symptoms may emerge gradually after the early weeks, so ongoing changes in mood or functioning should be assessed.

Does postpartum depression mean someone is failing as a parent?

No. It is a treatable health condition, and asking for help is a protective step.
