One-hour oral glucose tolerance test in pregnancy

The test is a screening check for gestational diabetes. A healthcare professional takes a blood sample, you drink a glucose solution, and another sample is taken after the waiting period. The result reflects blood glucose handling at that visit; it does not by itself describe your overall health or confirm a diagnosis in every testing pathway. If the screening result is above the local threshold, your team may arrange a longer diagnostic glucose tolerance test.

Follow the clinic's instructions about eating, drinking, and medicines because preparation varies by the test pathway. Wear clothing that allows easy access to your arm and bring water and a snack for afterward if the clinic permits it. Sit quietly during the waiting period. Tell staff if you feel nauseated, shaky, sweaty, light-headed, or unwell; they can decide whether to stop or modify the test.

During or after testing, ask staff for help if you feel faint, confused, very weak, or unable to keep the drink down. After leaving, contact your maternity team for persistent vomiting, marked dizziness, or symptoms that concern you. A screening result that needs follow-up is not an emergency by itself, but it should not be ignored.
