One eye red and watery

Dust, smoke, dry air, or an eyelash can trigger watering in one eye. Conjunctivitis may add pinkness, sticky discharge, or eyelids that cling together. Allergy more often causes itching and may affect both eyes, although one side can be more noticeable. A tear-drainage problem can make tears spill over repeatedly. Pain, light sensitivity, a foreign-body sensation, or changes in sight suggest that the surface or deeper parts of the eye need examination.

Wash your hands and gently rinse away a loose irritant with clean water or sterile saline. Do not rub the eye or try to remove anything embedded in it. Stop contact lenses and eye makeup for now, and use a clean tissue for tears or discharge. Avoid sharing towels and seek advice if watering persists, discharge develops, or the redness is becoming more uncomfortable.

Seek urgent care if vision is blurred or reduced, pain is significant, light is painful, the eye is difficult to open, or a chemical or sharp object has entered it. Fever, swelling around the eye, or pain with eye movement also needs urgent review. After a chemical splash, rinse continuously with clean running water while arranging emergency help.

Ask whether the watering comes from surface irritation, conjunctivitis, allergy, or tear-drainage trouble. Ask whether you need an eye examination, which drops are suitable, and when lenses can be worn again.
