One Eye Red After Wearing Contacts: What to Know

A lens can dry or rub the eye surface, trap debris, or become uncomfortable when worn too long or handled with unclean hands. Redness can also occur with allergic conjunctivitis or conjunctivitis. Contact-lens-related infection can affect the cornea and may worsen quickly, particularly when pain, light sensitivity, discharge or blurred vision accompanies the redness. The appearance alone cannot reliably separate mild irritation from a problem that needs treatment.

Wash and dry your hands, remove the lens, and do not put it back in. Keep the lens and its case rather than reusing them until a clinician advises you; never rinse lenses with tap water. Wear glasses, avoid eye makeup and do not rub the eye. Do not use leftover antibiotic or steroid drops. Arrange prompt advice if redness remains after lens removal, and mention the lens type, wearing time, cleaning method and whether you slept or showered in it.

Seek same-day eye care for pain, light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, a white or cloudy spot on the cornea, increasing redness, swelling, or pus-like discharge. Emergency assessment is appropriate after a chemical splash or injury. Do not drive yourself if vision is affected. Even without severe symptoms, contact-lens wearers should obtain advice when a red eye does not settle promptly after removing the lens.
