What should you know about omega 3 prostate cancer?

Omega-3 fats occur in foods such as oily fish and are also sold as capsules or liquid supplements. A supplement can have a different dose and purity from another product, and it may interact with medicines or affect bleeding. It should not be presented as a way to remove a tumour or control prostate cancer on its own.

Prostate cancer care depends on the cancer's grade, extent, symptoms, general health and preferences. Difficulty passing urine can occur for several reasons, including non-cancerous prostate enlargement, and does not by itself show that cancer is present. Assessment may include examination, blood tests, scans or tissue sampling.

Tell your urologist, oncologist and pharmacist about every supplement, including the brand, ingredients and amount. Ask before starting omega-3 if you take blood-thinning medicine, have a bleeding problem or are preparing for an operation. Do not stop prescribed prostate cancer treatment to try a supplement.

If treatment is needed, options may include monitoring in selected situations, prostate removal surgery, radiotherapy or brachytherapy. More advanced disease may call for medicines such as targeted radioisotope therapy or bone-strengthening therapy when clinically suitable. Omega-3 should be considered only as part of a broader nutrition and medication discussion.

Seek urgent help if you cannot pass urine, have heavy bleeding, black stools, severe abdominal or back pain, sudden weakness or trouble breathing. Contact your cancer team about persistent urinary change, new bone pain or unexpected bruising. These signs need assessment and do not establish prostate cancer or treatment failure by themselves.
