What should you know about olive oil to treat cradle cap?

Short answer
Olive oil is not the preferred treatment for cradle cap because it may irritate an infant's scalp; gentle softening, washing, and medical advice are safer options.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What cradle cap looks like
Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, commonly appears as greasy yellow, white, or brown scale on the scalp. The skin underneath may look mildly pink. It is usually not a sign that the scalp is dirty, and picking at the scale can cause soreness or small breaks in the skin.
An oil may loosen scale, but olive oil can irritate delicate skin and may encourage further buildup. A baby with a dry, scaly scalp does not automatically have cradle cap, so persistent or unusual changes deserve an assessment.
Safer scalp care
Wash the scalp gently with a mild baby shampoo, then use a soft brush only on loosened scale. Never scratch, peel, or pull flakes away. If a clinician recommends a moisturising approach, follow the product instructions and rinse away residue rather than leaving a heavy layer on the scalp.
If scale is extensive or does not improve, a clinician may discuss emollient therapy or a topical antifungal treatment when another scalp process is suspected. Do not use medicated products on an infant without checking the age, area, and directions with a healthcare professional.
When to seek care
Arrange medical review for bleeding, pus, oozing, marked swelling, fever, significant discomfort, hair loss in patches, or a rash spreading beyond the scalp. Seek advice if the baby seems unwell or if the scale returns repeatedly despite gentle washing. These features can point to infection or a different skin condition.
Questions for your doctor
Does this look like cradle cap? Which shampoo or moisturiser is suitable for my baby's age? Should any loose scale be softened, and for how long? What signs would mean infection or a need for treatment?
