What should you know about oligometastatic prostate cancer?

Oligometastatic describes the pattern and extent of spread seen on imaging. Prostate cancer commonly needs assessment of the pelvis, lymph nodes and bones, and the team may use several scans to map the disease. The term does not determine one treatment; age, general health, previous treatment, symptoms, tumour features and personal priorities all matter.

Ask how treatment will affect urinary control, bowel function, sexual health, energy and bone health, and how PSA and imaging will be followed.

Seek urgent help if you cannot pass urine, develop new leg weakness or numbness, lose bowel or bladder control, have severe back or bone pain, or feel suddenly unwell with fever. These symptoms can signal blockage, infection or pressure on nerves and need prompt assessment.

Where has the cancer spread, and which scans confirm it? What is the goal of treatment to the prostate and each spread site? Do I need hormone treatment, radiotherapy, surgery or another medicine? How will urinary, sexual and bone health be protected? What changes in PSA, pain or urination should prompt a call?
