What should you know about oligohydramnios treatment?

Amniotic fluid surrounds and cushions your baby, allowing movement and supporting development. A low measurement can happen because fluid is leaking, the placenta is not working as well as expected, your baby is making less urine, or the pregnancy is further along. Sometimes no single cause is found.

A clinician may confirm the finding with an ultrasound and assess growth, blood flow, movements, and the placenta. One measurement does not determine the whole plan; the trend and the wider pregnancy picture matter.

Attend the recommended antenatal checks and ultrasounds. Monitoring may include repeat fluid measurements, a growth scan, fetal heart-rate checks, and discussion of your baby’s movements. Drinking fluids may be suggested when dehydration could be contributing, but it cannot correct every cause.

Treatment may mean closer observation, addressing a related problem, or planning birth when continuing the pregnancy becomes less safe. A Growth Scan can assess growth and wellbeing. If birth is advised, Induction of Labour may be discussed when it is clinically suitable.

Contact your maternity unit promptly if you notice reduced or changed baby movements, fluid trickling or a gush from the vagina, vaginal bleeding, regular painful contractions, fever, or severe abdominal pain. These symptoms need assessment because they may signal ruptured membranes, infection, labour, or another pregnancy concern.

Ask what the fluid measurement means in your case, whether your membranes may have ruptured, how often monitoring is needed, how growth and blood flow look, and what findings would lead to admission or birth planning.
