Oligohydramnios in pregnancy

Amniotic fluid surrounds the baby and helps provide room for movement. Ultrasound estimates whether the amount is lower than expected; the interpretation depends on gestational age and the wider scan findings. Low fluid may be linked with leaking membranes, placental problems, fetal urinary-tract concerns, or a pregnancy that is progressing beyond its expected timing, though the cause is not always clear.

Many people do not feel a specific symptom. A clinician may look for fluid leakage, measure growth, assess the placenta, and monitor fetal wellbeing. A low measurement is a reason for a tailored plan, not a diagnosis that predicts one outcome for every pregnancy.

Attend the follow-up appointments your maternity team recommends. Monitoring may include a Growth Scan, repeat fluid measurements, fetal heart-rate checks, and review of movements. Drink normally unless instructed otherwise, and report suspected fluid leakage rather than waiting for the next appointment. Keep track of your baby’s usual movements and ask how your unit wants you to report changes.

Call your maternity unit urgently for reduced fetal movement, fluid leakage, bleeding, regular contractions, severe pain, fever, or feeling faint or unwell. The team may recommend closer observation or discuss Induction of Labour when the scan and monitoring suggest that continuing the pregnancy carries concern. Decisions depend on your individual findings.
