What should you know about oily scalp care?

Short answer
Oily scalp care works best when you cleanse the scalp regularly, keep products light at the roots and treat flaking or inflammation when it appears.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means
Sebum is produced at the scalp surface and can build up between washes, especially with heat, exercise, hats or rich styling products. An oily scalp may feel greasy soon after washing, but the hair lengths can still be dry because oil does not travel evenly along every strand.
Itching or visible scale may indicate dandruff. Greasy scale with redness around the hairline, ears or eyebrows can occur with seborrhoeic dermatitis. These patterns need more than simply washing harder.
What to do
Use a gentle shampoo on the scalp and massage with fingertips, not nails. Rinse well, then place conditioner mainly through the mid-lengths and ends. Clean brushes regularly and avoid applying thick oils, waxes or leave-in products directly to the roots if they increase buildup.
If flakes or itch persist, a medicated shampoo treatment may be suitable. Follow its directions carefully, including how long it stays on the scalp, and stop or seek advice if it causes significant irritation. Adjust wash frequency to comfort, activity and oil production rather than following a fixed rule.
When to seek care
Arrange medical review for persistent itch, painful spots, thick scale, bleeding from scratching, oozing or patchy hair loss. A dermatologist can distinguish dandruff from psoriasis, infection, contact irritation or seborrhoeic dermatitis when routine care is not enough.
Questions for your doctor
How often should I wash my scalp? Is my flaking consistent with dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis? Would medicated shampoo treatment help, and how can I protect dry hair lengths while treating the roots?

Questions people ask
Is daily washing harmful for an oily scalp?
Not necessarily. A gentle shampoo can be used as needed if the scalp tolerates it; harsh scrubbing is more likely to cause irritation.
Why are my roots oily but my ends dry?
Scalp oil may not spread along the full hair shaft, and cleansing or heat styling can further dry the lengths.
