Oily cyst in the breast

An oily cyst in the breast is often a fluid-filled area containing fatty material, but imaging is needed to identify its nature confidently. The term may describe an oil cyst, which can form when fatty breast tissue changes after injury, surgery, or another local process.

An oil cyst is usually a benign breast change, meaning it is not itself breast cancer. A breast lump is a common presentation of many benign breast conditions, and its presence alone does not establish cancer. Texture, tenderness, movement, skin appearance, and the imaging pattern all help clinicians decide what the finding represents.

Some cysts are painless; others become tender or more noticeable around hormonal changes. A report may recommend observation, repeat imaging, or sampling depending on the appearance and your symptoms. The word cyst on a report does not replace a clinical explanation of the specific finding.

Arrange review with the clinician who examined you or requested imaging. Take any earlier breast scans so the radiologist can compare changes over time. A breast ultrasound can help distinguish fluid-filled areas from solid tissue and can guide the next step when the appearance is unclear.

Do not repeatedly press the area to test it, as this can increase soreness. Note when you first noticed the lump, whether it changes with your menstrual cycle, and whether there has been trauma, surgery, discharge, or skin change.

Request prompt assessment for a new or enlarging lump, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, persistent one-sided pain, redness with warmth, or swelling in the armpit. Fever with a painful red breast needs timely medical care because infection may require treatment. Seek urgent help if severe pain or rapid swelling develops.

Ask whether the finding has the typical appearance of an oil cyst, whether comparison with earlier images is needed, and whether observation, ultrasound follow-up, drainage, or another assessment is appropriate.
