Oil Lump Under the Skin: What to Know

A cyst may feel smooth, rounded, and movable, sometimes with a small opening in the surface. A boil is more likely to become tender, warm, red, and filled with pus as inflammation develops. Other skin lumps can look or feel similar, including benign growths and, less commonly, skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma.

The word oil describes a sensation or material, not a diagnosis. Location, duration, growth, tenderness, surface change, and whether the lump drains are more useful clues. A clinician may examine it and decide whether monitoring, drainage, sampling, or removal is appropriate.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or repeatedly massage the lump. Keep the area clean and avoid friction from tight clothing or shaving. A warm, clean compress may be soothing for a tender superficial spot, but stop if pain or redness increases. Do not apply harsh chemicals or leftover medicines.

Arrange a routine assessment for a new or persistent lump. Treatment depends on the diagnosis; a steroid injection into the skin may help selected inflamed lesions, but it is not suitable for every lump and does not replace examination.

Seek prompt care if the lump grows quickly, becomes very painful, hot, or red, drains pus or blood, or is accompanied by fever. Arrange an urgent review for a lesion that repeatedly bleeds, crusts, ulcerates, or fails to heal. Any lump that remains unexplained should be checked rather than self-treated.
