What should you know about OGTT for pregnant woman?

The test measures blood glucose after a period without food and again after you drink a measured glucose solution. Comparing the readings shows how quickly glucose leaves your bloodstream. A result outside the range used by your maternity service may lead to further discussion or a gestational diabetes diagnosis; one reading should be interpreted with your pregnancy history and the laboratory's reference range.

Follow the clinic's instructions about fasting, medicines and arrival time. Bring water if the clinic permits it, wear comfortable clothing, and plan to remain at the site while samples are collected. Avoid strenuous activity during the appointment because movement can affect glucose handling. If you feel sick after the drink, tell staff rather than leaving without advice. Ask how and when results will be shared.

Contact your maternity team promptly if you cannot keep the glucose drink down, become faint, confused or unusually weak, or develop severe vomiting. Seek urgent help for collapse, trouble breathing, chest pain, heavy bleeding or severe abdominal pain. These symptoms need assessment regardless of the eventual OGTT result.

Ask whether you need to fast, which medicines you should take, how long the visit may last, and what happens if you vomit. You can also ask what your result means for monitoring, food choices and follow-up.
