What should you know about ocular melanoma staging?

The eye specialist assesses the tumour's location and dimensions, the eye structures involved, and whether nearby tissues are affected. Further examinations or imaging may assess the liver and other parts of the body because ocular melanoma can spread outside the eye. The resulting stage helps the team discuss treatment choices and follow-up; it does not describe your symptoms alone.

Bring your scan and examination questions to the ophthalmic oncology appointment. Ask whether the stage is based on eye findings only or also on body imaging, and which results are pending. Treatment can be local, including brachytherapy or radiotherapy, or may involve a broader plan when disease is found elsewhere.

Seek prompt advice for a sudden change in sight, new flashes or floaters, eye pain, increasing redness, or a missing area of vision. Get urgent medical help for sudden visual loss with severe pain, or new breathlessness, confusion, or profound weakness while staging or treatment is underway.
