What should you know about ocular demodicosis?

Demodex mites can live around eyelashes and oil glands. When their number or effect on the eyelid becomes troublesome, the lid margin may become inflamed. People can notice morning crusting, a tickling sensation, watering, dryness, blurred comfort, or sensitivity to light. Similar symptoms occur with blepharitis, dry eye, allergy, and rosacea, so symptoms alone cannot identify Demodex.

An examination may include looking closely at the lashes and eyelid edges. The clinician checks for cylindrical flakes, blocked glands, surface irritation, and corneal involvement. Avoid sharing eye cosmetics or towels while symptoms are active, and replace old eye makeup if advised.

Follow the cleansing routine prescribed for your eyelids, using clean hands and a product suitable for the eye area. Warm compresses may help loosen debris when your clinician recommends them. Do not apply household oils, insect products, or non-eye-safe creams near the eye. Pause contact lenses and eye makeup if they worsen irritation.

Treatment may involve a clinician-selected eyelid preparation, lubricant drops, or management of an associated condition such as rosacea. A medicated shampoo treatment is not automatically suitable for eyelids; use it near the eyes only when specifically directed by a professional.

Seek same-day eye care for eye pain, marked light sensitivity, reduced vision, severe swelling, or a feeling that something is stuck on the eye. Urgent assessment is also needed for pus, injury, or rapidly worsening redness. Mild recurring irritation still merits review when home cleansing has not helped, because the ocular surface may need examination.

Ask whether the lashes show Demodex-related changes, whether dry eye or rosacea is contributing, which cleanser or drops are safe, and how long to continue the routine. Ask when contact lenses and cosmetics can be restarted.
