Short answer

Occupational therapy for rheumatoid arthritis helps protect inflamed joints, adapt daily tasks and maintain hand function safely.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What therapy can address

A therapist assesses how pain, swelling and stiffness affect dressing, cooking, writing, work and sleep. Treatment may include pacing, joint-protection methods, gentle range-of-motion work, splints and practical changes to tools or the home. A splint may support a painful joint during a task or rest, but it should fit your symptoms and not replace movement when movement is advised.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory condition, so occupational therapy works alongside medical care rather than treating inflammation on its own. Hand swelling, finger stiffness, joint pain and morning joint stiffness can all guide the assessment.

Making daily tasks easier

Bring examples of tasks that are difficult and note when symptoms are strongest. Use larger handles, avoid prolonged tight gripping, alternate heavy and light tasks, and take planned pauses before fatigue builds. Gentle exercises should stay within the range recommended by your therapist; forcing a hot or swollen joint can aggravate symptoms.

Use prescribed splints exactly as directed and check the skin after removing one. Keep your rheumatology plan current; anti-inflammatory medication may be part of medical treatment, but medication changes belong with the prescribing clinician.

When to seek medical advice

Tell your care team if swelling, warmth, pain or loss of function is worsening, especially when several joints change together. Seek urgent care for a hot, very painful joint with fever, sudden severe weakness, chest pain or difficulty breathing. Contact the therapist about numbness, skin pressure or colour change from a splint.

Questions for your doctor

Which tasks should I modify first? Would a splint help, and when should I wear it? Which exercises are suitable during a flare? How can I protect my fingers and wrists at work? Which changes in swelling or function should prompt a medication review?

Questions people ask

Can occupational therapy cure rheumatoid arthritis?

No. It supports function and symptom management while medical treatment addresses the underlying inflammatory disease.

Are exercises suitable during every flare?

Not always. A therapist can adjust movement, rest and splint use to the level of swelling and pain at that time.
