What should you know about occ health screening?

The appointment usually starts with questions about your role, working environment, current symptoms, medical history, medicines, and any exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, heat, infection, or physical strain. Depending on the job, it may include blood pressure, vision, hearing, breathing checks, or a focused examination. The checks should relate to the demands and risks of the role.

Screening is different from diagnosing every possible illness. It may identify a need for a GP review, specialist assessment, workplace control, or ongoing monitoring. Tell the clinician about symptoms that appear during work and what improves them away from work.

Bring a current medicine list, relevant medical reports, vaccination information if requested, and details of workplace substances or equipment. Describe tasks accurately, including lifting, shift patterns, protective equipment, and breaks. If you monitor blood pressure at home, record the readings and bring your Digital Blood Pressure Monitor if the service asks you to do so. Ask how results are shared and what information is sent to your employer.

Seek urgent medical help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, sudden weakness, confusion, or a serious workplace exposure. Arrange a clinical appointment for repeated headaches, dizziness, new breathing symptoms, persistent skin irritation, or symptoms that reliably worsen during a particular task. A screening visit should not replace care for a new or severe problem.
