OAE hearing test for newborns: what parents should know

A small soft tip sits in the baby’s ear canal and plays quiet sounds. The equipment records an echo made by healthy sensory cells in the inner ear. The test does not require the baby to respond or speak, and it is usually easiest while a baby is settled or asleep. A result that needs repeating can happen when there is movement, background noise, fluid in the middle ear, or a temporary blockage. It does not by itself diagnose the reason for a hearing concern.

Keep the follow-up appointment if the screen needs repeating, even if your baby reacts to loud sounds. A hearing specialist may use a more detailed hearing test to clarify hearing in each ear. Share any family history of childhood hearing loss, concerns about feeding or development, and details of ear infections with the clinician. Never put cotton buds or objects into a newborn’s ear; ask about safe care if you see discharge.

Contact your baby’s healthcare team promptly for fluid or pus from the ear, swelling around the ear, fever, marked irritability, or a baby who seems unusually difficult to settle. Arrange assessment if your baby does not startle or respond to sound as expected, or if you notice uneven responses between the ears. Urgent help is appropriate if your baby appears seriously unwell or has breathing difficulty.
