How does NuvaRing prevent pregnancy?

The ring sits inside the vagina and releases estrogen and progestogen through the vaginal lining. These hormones mainly prevent the ovary from releasing an egg. They also make cervical mucus thicker, which can hinder sperm movement, and alter the lining of the uterus. The ring does not protect against sexually transmitted infections, so condoms may still be useful for infection protection.

Follow the schedule supplied with your prescription. A common routine is to keep one ring in place for three weeks, remove it for a ring-free week, then insert a new ring. Wash your hands before insertion and removal, and check that it is comfortable. If the ring is out longer than the instructions allow, pregnancy protection may be reduced; use condoms and ask a pharmacist or clinician what to do next. Vomiting and diarrhoea do not usually interfere with the hormones because they are not absorbed through the stomach.

Seek urgent help for sudden chest pain, trouble breathing, coughing blood, a painful swollen leg, sudden weakness, or a severe unusual headache. These can signal a blood clot or another serious problem. Contact a clinician promptly for persistent severe abdominal pain, vision changes, or jaundice. Arrange a review if side effects remain troublesome or if you may be pregnant.
