What should you know about nuvaring and pregnancy?

NuvaRing is intended to prevent ovulation when used on schedule, but no contraceptive method works in every circumstance. Risk may rise after a late insertion, a delayed replacement, a prolonged period outside the vagina, vomiting or diarrhoea affecting another method, or use of medicines that interfere with hormonal contraception.

A late period, nausea, breast changes, or tiredness can have several causes and do not confirm pregnancy. A home test is useful when pregnancy is possible; follow its instructions and repeat or seek advice if the result is negative but concern continues.

Take a pregnancy test and contact your clinician or pharmacist with the date of your last ring change, any time the ring was out, and the dates of unprotected sex. Do not insert another ring until you have received individual advice if the test is positive or pregnancy remains possible.

If a ring was missed recently, ask promptly whether emergency contraception or a backup method is appropriate. Do not rely on memory alone: the correct advice depends on the timing and the product instructions.

Get urgent care for severe one-sided lower abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, or heavy vaginal bleeding when pregnancy is possible. These symptoms can indicate a complication that needs immediate assessment.

Seek emergency help for chest pain, difficulty breathing, coughing blood, sudden weakness, or a painful swollen leg. Tell the healthcare team that you use or recently used a hormonal vaginal ring.
