Nursing management of mumps

Mumps is a viral infection that commonly causes tender swollen glands near the jaw, with fever, headache, tiredness and reduced appetite. Nursing assessment checks swallowing, hydration, pain, temperature and changes in alertness. The clinician may need to distinguish mumps from other causes of swollen glands.

Because mumps can spread through respiratory droplets, avoid close contact and sharing cups or utensils while infectious, and follow local medical advice about staying away from school or work. A GP consultation can confirm the next steps and help notify relevant services when required.

Offer frequent drinks and soft foods if chewing hurts. Rest, gentle cool compresses and an age-appropriate pain or fever medicine advised by a clinician or pharmacist may help. Do not give aspirin to children. Wash hands, improve ventilation and clean commonly touched surfaces. Check that household vaccination records are up to date; MMR vaccination helps prevent mumps.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe dehydration, persistent vomiting, marked drowsiness, severe headache with neck stiffness, seizures, or sudden severe testicular, abdominal or pelvic pain. Contact a clinician if symptoms are worsening, the person cannot drink, or fever does not settle.

Ask how long to avoid close contact, which fluids and medicines are suitable, whether testing is needed, and whether family members need vaccination advice.
