Numbness in the left palm and fingers

Numbness in the left palm and fingers may result from nerve compression at the wrist, elbow, or neck. It can also follow an injury or another health problem, so the distribution and timing matter.

Thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger symptoms can fit median-nerve irritation at the wrist, including Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Numbness mainly in the little finger and the adjacent side of the ring finger more often follows the ulnar nerve, which can be irritated at the elbow in Cubital Tunnel Syndrome. Neck pain or symptoms travelling from the neck into the arm can occur with Cervical Radiculopathy. If symptoms change with shoulder position and include color or temperature changes, a clinician may also consider Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.

Write down exactly which fingers and which side of the palm feel altered. Note whether symptoms appear at night, during keyboard work, while holding a phone, or when the elbow is bent. Reduce positions that reproduce the sensation, keep wrists neutral for tasks, and avoid leaning on the elbow. Protect reduced sensation from hot water and sharp objects. Arrange an examination when symptoms persist, spread, disturb sleep, or affect grip and fine hand movements. A clinician can test strength, sensation, reflexes, and neck and upper-limb movement.

Get urgent help for sudden numbness with facial drooping, speech trouble, new weakness, confusion, or difficulty walking. Seek prompt care after trauma or when the hand is cold, discolored, severely swollen, or intensely painful.
