Numb index finger on the right hand: what to know

The index finger is commonly served by the median nerve, whose pathway runs from the neck through the arm and wrist. Symptoms that are worse at night, with wrist bending, or during gripping can occur with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Neck pain or tingling that travels down the arm can point toward Cervical Radiculopathy. A recent injury, sustained pressure, swelling, or conditions affecting nerves can also change sensation. Numbness alone cannot identify one diagnosis.

Notice when the numbness began, whether it is constant, and whether shaking or changing position alters it. Reduce prolonged wrist bending and avoid leaning on the elbow or resting the hand on hard edges. Keep a note of weakness, dropping objects, neck pain, colour change, or symptoms in other fingers. A clinician may compare sensation, strength, reflexes, and movement in the neck, arm, and hand before deciding whether further testing is useful.

Arrange medical assessment if numbness persists, returns often, spreads, or comes with hand weakness or worsening pain. Seek urgent help for sudden numbness with facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe dizziness, or new weakness on one side. Prompt assessment is also sensible after a significant injury, or if the hand becomes unusually cold, pale, or blue.
