What should you know about numb finger after injury?

A cut, crush, twist, dislocation, or fracture can irritate or damage a digital nerve. Swelling, a tight dressing, or pressure around the wrist or elbow can also alter sensation. The location matters: numbness in selected fingers may point toward a nerve pathway in the hand, arm, or neck, while numbness with colour change or coldness raises concern about circulation.

Hand numbness can occur with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Cervical Radiculopathy, Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, or Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, but a recent injury can have a different explanation. The symptom alone cannot identify the cause.

Remove rings before swelling increases, keep the hand supported, and follow the injury instructions you were given. Do not tightly wrap or tape a numb finger, and avoid heat or direct pressure when sensation is reduced. Note when numbness began, which fingers are affected, whether it is constant, and whether movement or skin colour has changed.

Arrange an assessment if sensation is not returning, the injury involved a deep cut or deformity, or pain and swelling are increasing. A clinician may check feeling, strength, circulation, alignment, and tendon function.

Seek urgent care for a pale, blue, or cold finger, severe pain or swelling, an open injury, visible deformity, inability to move the finger, or numbness that began suddenly with weakness in the arm or face. These signs can require time-sensitive treatment.

Could the injury have affected a nerve, tendon, bone, or blood vessel? Do I need imaging or a splint? How should I protect the finger while sensation is reduced? Which changes mean I should return urgently?
