Noxzema for sunburn: what to know

A sunburn is an inflammatory injury caused by ultraviolet exposure. The affected skin may feel hot, tender, tight, or itchy, and redness can later be followed by peeling or blisters. A cleanser or cream that feels refreshing on intact skin may sting when the skin barrier is disrupted. Noxzema products vary, so the label matters; menthol, fragrance, and other botanical or cleansing ingredients can be uncomfortable for some people. Cooling sensation does not mean the burn is healing.

Move out of the sun, use a cool damp cloth or a cool shower, and drink fluids. Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser or emollient to slightly damp skin if it does not sting; see [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) for the general approach. Do not scrub, peel loose skin, or break blisters. Protect the area from further sun with clothing and shade. A pharmacist or clinician can help choose pain relief that fits your health history. Seek prompt medical advice for extensive blistering, severe swelling, worsening pain, fever, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, or signs of dehydration. Get urgent help for trouble breathing, fainting, or swelling of the face or throat.
