What should you know about nose itching pregnancy?

Pregnancy can make skin feel more sensitive, while nasal congestion, frequent wiping, dry air and new products can irritate the skin around the nostrils. Contact dermatitis may cause itch with redness or scaling where a product touches. Most people with atopic dermatitis notice intense itching, dryness and inflamed patches, and pregnancy can alter an existing pattern. Hives cause raised itchy areas that may move. An itchy nose alone does not identify a pregnancy complication, but a widespread or severe itch deserves assessment because the clinician may need to consider causes beyond the nose.

Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and apply a plain moisturiser to intact outer skin. Dab rather than rub after blowing your nose, and consider a humidifier if indoor air feels dry. Do not start a medicated cream, antihistamine, decongestant or essential oil without checking its suitability in pregnancy. A pharmacist, midwife or doctor can review ingredients, dose and the location of application. Keep a note of when the itch began, whether a product changed, and whether other areas are affected.

Contact your maternity or healthcare team for persistent itch, a spreading rash, marked redness, cracks, discharge or sleep disruption. Seek prompt advice for severe itch without much rash, especially when it affects the palms or soles or is widespread, because pregnancy-related causes may need evaluation. Get urgent help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty, throat tightness, faintness, fever or rapidly worsening painful redness.

Ask which moisturiser and medicines are suitable at your stage of pregnancy, whether your symptoms resemble contact dermatitis or eczema, and whether the itch elsewhere on your body changes the urgency. Mention congestion, new products, allergies and any previous skin condition.
