What should you know about nose impetigo treatments?

Impetigo is a contagious bacterial infection affecting the surface of the skin. Around the nostrils it may begin with small blisters, oozing spots or raw skin and then form yellow-brown crusts. Atopic dermatitis can leave the skin barrier vulnerable, allowing impetigo to develop on irritated areas. Scratching can transfer bacteria to nearby skin, fingers, towels or household surfaces. A clinician may diagnose it by examining the pattern and extent of the lesions.

For a small, localised area, a clinician may prescribe a topical antibiotic and explain how to apply it after gentle cleansing. More widespread, spreading or deeper infection may need an oral antibiotic. Use the medicine for the prescribed duration, even if the crusts improve sooner. Wash hands after touching the nose, avoid picking, keep fingernails short and do not share towels, pillows, cosmetics or razors. Launder items that touch the affected skin and cover lesions when practical.

Arrange medical review when crusting, oozing or sores are spreading, recurring or not improving with prescribed treatment. Prompt assessment is needed if the skin around the eye becomes swollen, painful or red, because infection can extend beyond the original area. Seek urgent care for fever, marked illness, severe facial swelling or breathing difficulty. A sore inside the nostril may have another cause, so avoid using leftover antibiotics without an examination.

Ask whether the infection is limited enough for topical treatment, how to clean the crusts safely, whether close contacts need advice, and when you can return to school, work, swimming or shared activities. Mention eczema, recurrent episodes and any medicine allergies.
