Norovirus infection treatment

Norovirus is a viral digestive infection, so treatment centres on preventing dehydration while the immune system clears it. Vomiting and diarrhoea can remove water and salts faster than usual. Oral rehydration solutions can replace both more effectively than relying on very sweet drinks. Antibiotics do not treat norovirus, and anti-diarrhoeal medicines are not suitable for everyone.

Take small sips at short intervals and increase gradually as your stomach settles. Rest, then return to normal foods in small portions when hungry. Wash hands with soap and water, disinfect areas soiled by vomit or stool, and do not prepare meals for others while symptomatic. Before taking an over-the-counter medicine, check the label or speak with a pharmacist, particularly for children, pregnancy or long-term conditions.

Arrange urgent assessment if you cannot drink, have very little urine, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, or trouble breathing. Contact a clinician if symptoms continue without improvement or if fluid loss is especially concerning because of age, pregnancy or another health condition.
