Norovirus infection symptoms

Norovirus affects the digestive tract. People with norovirus infection commonly present with repeated vomiting, loose or watery stools, nausea and abdominal cramps. Fever, headache, body aches and reduced appetite can also occur. Symptoms may appear after contact with an infected person or contaminated food or surfaces, but symptoms alone cannot identify the exact cause of gastroenteritis.

Sip water or oral rehydration solution often, using small amounts if vomiting is frequent. Rest and eat small, plain portions when ready. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after using the toilet and before handling food; clean contaminated bathroom surfaces and avoid sharing towels. Stay away from food preparation for others while unwell.

Seek prompt medical care if fluids will not stay down, urine becomes very infrequent, or you develop marked dizziness, confusion, severe weakness, severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, or breathing difficulty. Get advice for a baby, older adult, pregnant person or anyone with a condition that makes fluid loss more hazardous.
