What should you know about norgestrel ethinylestradiol?

Norgestrel is a progestogen and ethinylestradiol is an oestrogen. Together they prevent ovulation and make cervical mucus less welcoming to sperm; they also change the uterine lining. This medicine does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. A combined pill may make bleeding more predictable, but spotting, nausea, breast tenderness, headache, or mood changes can occur, particularly after starting or changing contraception.

Suitability depends on your medical history. Tell the prescriber about migraine with aura, previous blood clots, high blood pressure, liver disease, smoking, recent surgery, and medicines or supplements. Breastfeeding, age, and the time since giving birth can also affect the choice.

Follow the pack instructions and take each tablet at the same time every day. If you miss a tablet, vomit soon after taking it, or have severe diarrhoea, check the product instructions or ask a pharmacist because contraceptive protection can be affected. Tell clinicians and pharmacists that you use a combined pill before starting another medicine. Use condoms when infection protection is needed or when pill protection may have been interrupted.

Get urgent medical help for sudden chest pain, breathlessness, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling or pain, sudden weakness, trouble speaking, or a severe unusual headache. Contact the prescriber about persistent side effects, very high blood pressure symptoms, or bleeding that remains troublesome.

Ask whether your migraine history, blood pressure, smoking status, and other medicines affect suitability; what to do after a missed tablet; and which alternative contraception would fit your preferences if side effects continue.
