Short answer

Nonbullous impetigo treatment usually involves gentle cleansing, limiting spread to other people, and a prescribed topical or oral antibiotic chosen for the extent of infection.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What nonbullous impetigo looks like

Nonbullous impetigo is a superficial bacterial skin infection. It often begins in a small break in the skin, such as a scratch, insect bite, or area irritated by eczema. Small blisters may break quickly, leaving moist sores that develop a yellow-brown crust. It can affect the face, hands, or other exposed skin and can spread through close contact or shared towels.

A clinician may diagnose it by examining the pattern and crusting. Similar-looking changes can occur with infected atopic dermatitis, cold sores, or other conditions, so avoid using leftover medicine or sharing treatment with another person.

Treatment and preventing spread

Use the prescribed antibiotic exactly as directed. A limited area may be treated with a topical antibiotic, while more widespread infection, several affected sites, or illness may require an oral antibiotic. Gently soften and wash away crusts with clean water as advised, pat the skin dry, and keep sores covered when practical.

Wash hands after touching the affected skin, keep fingernails short, and avoid scratching. Do not share towels, clothing, bedding, cosmetics, or razors. Launder items that touch the sores and avoid close skin-to-skin contact until a clinician says the infection is no longer readily spread. Treating an underlying itchy rash can help reduce repeated scratching and new breaks in the skin.

When to seek medical care

Arrange medical review if sores are spreading, returning, not improving with prescribed treatment, or involving the eyes. Seek prompt care for fever, marked pain, rapidly increasing redness or swelling, pus, or feeling generally unwell. Urgent assessment is also appropriate for facial swelling, eye pain, or vision changes. Babies, people with weakened immunity, and anyone with extensive skin involvement may need earlier review.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which treatment is appropriate for the area involved, how to clean and cover the sores, when contact with school or work is reasonable, and what to do if new crusts appear. If eczema or another itchy rash is present, ask how to control it without irritating the infected skin.

Questions people ask

Can nonbullous impetigo clear without treatment?

It can change over time, but medical assessment helps confirm the diagnosis, limit spread, and choose treatment suited to the infection.

Can I go to school or work with impetigo?

Ask the treating clinician about timing. Keep sores covered when possible, avoid close contact, and do not share personal items until the infection is considered no longer readily spread.
