What should you know about non weight bearing short leg cast?

Short answer
A non-weight-bearing short-leg cast supports the lower leg or foot while you keep weight off that limb during healing.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Weight rule
- The casted limb does not carry body weight until cleared
- Daily check
- Watch toes for colour, warmth, movement, and sensation
What the cast does
A short-leg cast generally extends below the knee and limits movement at the ankle and foot. Non-weight-bearing means the casted limb should not support your body when standing or walking unless your treating team changes that instruction. Crutches, a walker, or another mobility aid may be needed.
Keep the cast dry and do not insert objects inside it to scratch. Swelling can fluctuate, especially after injury, so elevation above heart level when resting may improve comfort if advised. Move the free toes gently and follow the permitted joint exercises.
Using it safely
Use the mobility aid exactly as demonstrated and clear loose rugs or clutter at home. Plan transfers before standing, wear a stable shoe on the other foot, and avoid hopping without support. Never trim, loosen, or remove the cast yourself.
Attend scheduled checks so healing, skin, circulation, and cast fit can be reviewed. Once weight-bearing is allowed, progress gradually; physiotherapy may help restore strength, balance, and walking confidence.
When to seek care
Contact the cast team urgently for worsening pain, tightness, numbness, pins and needles, blue or unusually cold toes, inability to move the toes, foul smell, drainage, or a wet, cracked, or broken cast. Sudden calf swelling or breathlessness needs emergency care.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how long the limb must remain non-weight-bearing, which exercises are allowed, how to bathe safely, and what equipment suits your home. If walking remains uneven after healing, ask whether limping or a limb-length difference needs assessment and whether custom orthotics could help.

Questions people ask
Can I put the foot down briefly?
Only if your treating team specifically permits it. Even brief loading can be unsafe for some injuries or procedures.
What if the cast feels too tight?
Elevate the limb and contact the cast team urgently if tightness persists or is accompanied by increasing pain, numbness, colour change, or cold toes.
