What should you know about non ulcerative colitis?

Colitis refers to inflammation of the colon. The word non ulcerative may indicate that ulcers were not seen, that the condition is being described before a diagnosis is settled, or that another bowel problem is causing similar symptoms. Abdominal pain and diarrhoea can occur with many conditions, including infection, medication effects and inflammatory bowel disease. The label alone does not establish the cause or predict how symptoms will develop.

A clinician may ask about stool changes, pain, fever, recent medicines, travel, diet and family history. Tests can include an examination, blood or stool tests, and sometimes a camera examination of the bowel. Results help distinguish inflammation from other explanations.

Arrange a GP consultation if diarrhoea continues, keeps returning, or is accompanied by pain, tiredness or changes in bowel habits. Keep a brief record of stool frequency, visible blood or mucus, pain location, temperature and foods or medicines taken. Drink fluids regularly, especially after loose stools, and choose simple foods that you tolerate while waiting for advice. Do not start leftover antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medicines without guidance, because they may obscure the cause or irritate the bowel.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, marked weakness, black stools, or a large amount of blood in the stool. Prompt assessment is also needed if you cannot keep fluids down or are passing very little urine. These warning signs can reflect dehydration, bleeding or another acute abdominal problem and should not be explained away by the word colitis.

Ask what evidence supports the term non ulcerative colitis, which causes are being considered, and whether stool or blood testing is needed. Ask which symptoms should trigger same-day care, what foods and medicines to avoid, and when follow-up or bowel assessment is appropriate.
