What should you know about non-surgical cellulite treatment?

How the structures involved in Cellulite differ from normal

Short answer

Non-surgical cellulite treatment can target skin laxity, fibrous bands, or surface texture, but the suitable method depends on the pattern and cause of the dimpling.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why options differ

Cellulite is a common skin texture pattern in which fat compartments, connective tissue and skin tension create dimples or an orange-peel appearance. It is not the same as a swollen, painful, hot area that appears suddenly. A consultation should distinguish cellulite from fluid retention, inflammation, a lump, or another skin change.

Energy-based treatments may warm tissue and support a tighter appearance. Microneedling can create controlled skin channels alongside radiofrequency energy. Subcision releases selected fibrous bands beneath a dimple, while carboxytherapy uses injected carbon dioxide. Each approach has different recovery and suitability considerations.

Choosing a treatment

Have the dimples examined while standing and moving, and discuss whether the main concern is laxity, fixed depressions, or uneven texture. Ask about the number and spacing of sessions, expected swelling or bruising, skin tone considerations, and what happens if the appearance changes with weight or muscle gain. Follow aftercare closely and photograph the area in consistent lighting.

When to seek care

Seek medical assessment rather than cosmetic treatment for sudden one-sided swelling, redness, warmth, significant tenderness, skin ulceration, or a new firm lump. After a procedure, contact the provider for worsening pain, spreading redness, blistering, unusual colour change, drainage, fever, or swelling that is not settling as instructed.

Questions for your doctor

What is causing my dimpling pattern? Which layer will the proposed treatment target? What side effects are more relevant for my skin type and medical history? How long should recovery take? Could the treatment affect tattoos, scars, veins, or areas of reduced sensation?

Questions people ask

Is cellulite the same as excess weight?

No. Cellulite reflects the relationship between fat compartments, connective tissue, and skin; it can be present across different body shapes.

Can one non-surgical treatment suit every dimple?

No. A fixed tethered dimple may need a different approach from widespread laxity or uneven texture.
