What should you know about non-sterile wound dressing?

Sterile dressings are processed and packaged for use where contact with a wound requires controlled cleanliness. Non-sterile items can be appropriate for some clean, intact-skin uses or as an outer layer when a clinician directs it, but they should not automatically be placed on an open wound. Dressing choice also depends on bleeding, drainage, depth, location, contamination, and whether the injury is a burn. A dressing does not disinfect a wound or replace cleaning and assessment.

Wash your hands, gently rinse away visible dirt with clean running water, and control bleeding with steady pressure using clean material. Cover the wound with an appropriate sterile dressing or a product recommended by a clinician, keeping adhesive off the injured surface. Change it when wet, dirty, loose, or according to instructions. Seek urgent care for bleeding that will not stop with pressure, a deep or gaping wound, loss of feeling or movement, an embedded object, or an injury from a bite. Arrange prompt review if redness spreads, pain increases, pus or a bad smell appears, fever develops, or the wound edges become increasingly swollen.
