What should you know about non-IgE-mediated allergy?

People may develop digestive discomfort, vomiting, loose stools, eczema flares or poor feeding, depending on the trigger and age. A symptom such as an itchy throat can have many causes. Non-IgE allergy is different from food intolerance, which does not involve the same immune mechanism.

Keep a dated record of foods, quantities, symptoms and timing. Do not remove several food groups without professional support, especially for a child, because nutritional gaps can develop. A clinician may recommend a carefully planned elimination followed by reintroduction; allergy testing can be useful in selected situations but may not identify every non-IgE reaction.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, widespread hives or repeated vomiting after a possible exposure. These symptoms can indicate anaphylaxis and need emergency treatment. Arrange prompt assessment for dehydration, blood in stool, persistent vomiting or poor growth.
