Hives are raised, itchy welts caused by the release of histamine and other inflammatory signals in the skin. Call emergency services immediately for hives with swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth, or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, confusion, or repeated vomiting. These can signal a severe allergic reaction. Seek prompt medical advice for widespread skin swelling, a rash with fever, or symptoms that do not improve with appropriate treatment.
