What should you know about non clear cell renal cell carcinoma?

The name describes kidney cancer cells that do not have the clear-cell appearance. It includes several subtypes, and pathology helps identify which one is present. The report may also describe grade and other features that help the team understand how the tumour behaves.

Staging assesses the kidney, nearby tissues, lymph nodes and distant organs. Kidney function, blood pressure, other medical conditions and the amount of tumour all matter when treatment is planned.

When surgery is suitable, the team may discuss kidney removal surgery or a more limited procedure, depending on tumour position and remaining kidney function. Tumour ablation may be an option for selected tumours when an operation is not the preferred approach.

For cancer that cannot be treated with local therapy alone, immunotherapy or targeted therapy may be considered. The choice depends on subtype, stage, previous treatment, kidney function and your priorities. Ask how each option is expected to help and how side effects will be monitored.

Seek urgent care for severe flank or abdominal pain, heavy blood in the urine, inability to pass urine, fainting, sudden breathlessness, chest pain or new confusion. During treatment, promptly report fever, a marked reduction in urine, severe diarrhoea, rash or breathing changes.

Ask which subtype and stage were found, whether the tumour can be removed or ablated, how treatment may affect kidney function, whether immunotherapy or targeted therapy fits the pathology, and which symptoms require an urgent call.
