Non-antibiotic treatment for UTI

A urinary tract infection can affect the bladder or other parts of the urinary system. Drinking fluids regularly, resting, and using a suitable pain reliever may reduce discomfort while you arrange advice. These measures do not replace testing or prescribed treatment when bacteria are causing the infection. Burning urine, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or cloudy urine can have different causes, so avoid using leftover antibiotics or someone else’s medicine.

Take small, regular drinks unless a clinician has told you to restrict fluids. Do not force large amounts of water. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on pain relief and whether a urine test is appropriate. Seek an assessment if symptoms continue, return, or occur during pregnancy, in a child, or in someone with a urinary tract problem. Ask whether antibiotics are needed and how to use them if prescribed.

Get urgent medical help for fever or chills, pain in the side or back, vomiting, confusion, marked weakness, or difficulty passing urine. These symptoms can signal a more serious infection or blockage and should not be managed with home measures alone.
