Short answer

No appetite and nausea when eating can have several causes, including stomach irritation, infection, reflux, heat-related illness, or low blood sugar.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What should you know about no appetite and nausea when eating?

The timing and accompanying symptoms help narrow the possibilities. Nausea after rich or spicy food may occur with reflux or gastritis, while vomiting or diarrhoea can point towards food poisoning or gastroenteritis. Upper-right abdominal pain after meals can occur with gallstones. Feeling faint, sweaty, weak, or confused needs prompt attention, particularly for someone using diabetes medicines.

What it may mean

Nausea is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. Stomach inflammation can make eating uncomfortable and reduce interest in food. Acid reflux may bring nausea with burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste, or symptoms that worsen when lying down. An infection may also cause poor appetite, fever, cramps, vomiting, or loose stools. Hepatitis A can cause nausea with tiredness, abdominal discomfort, dark urine, pale stools, or yellowing of the eyes and skin. Heat exhaustion may include heavy sweating, headache, dizziness, thirst, and weakness.

A clinician may ask when the symptoms began, what foods trigger them, whether you can keep fluids down, and which medicines or supplements you take. The assessment may include an examination and tests guided by your symptoms.

What you can do now

Take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Try small portions of plain foods when you feel able, and eat slowly. Avoid alcohol and foods that clearly worsen the nausea; fatty, spicy, or strongly scented foods can be difficult for some people. Rest in a cool place if heat may be involved, and avoid lying flat soon after eating if reflux is possible.

Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice. If you have diabetes, check your glucose as directed and follow your personal plan for suspected hypoglycaemia. Arrange a medical review if the problem keeps returning, affects your ability to eat, or is accompanied by ongoing pain or weight loss.

When to seek medical care

Seek urgent medical help if you cannot keep fluids down, become unusually drowsy or confused, faint, have severe or worsening abdominal pain, vomit blood, or pass black stools. Get prompt advice for signs of dehydration such as very little urine, a dry mouth, or marked dizziness. Yellow eyes or skin, chest pain, trouble breathing, or a severe headache also need urgent assessment.

If symptoms are mild but do not settle, or if nausea repeatedly prevents normal meals, book an appointment with a doctor. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with diabetes or other long-term conditions may need earlier advice.

Questions for your doctor

You could ask: What causes best fit my timing and other symptoms? Do I need tests or a medication review? How should I maintain fluids and food while I feel sick? Which warning signs mean I should seek urgent care?

Questions people ask

Why do I feel nauseated as soon as I start eating?

Possible explanations include reflux, stomach irritation, infection, medication effects, or an association between food and nausea. The pattern, accompanying symptoms, and duration matter.

Should I force myself to eat when I have no appetite?

Do not force a large meal. Sip fluids and try small portions of plain food when tolerated; seek advice if you cannot maintain hydration or the problem continues.

When is nausea an emergency?

Urgent care is needed for severe pain, fainting, confusion, blood in vomit, black stools, trouble breathing, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or inability to keep fluids down.
