Ketoconazole is an antifungal ingredient. Use a ketoconazole shampoo or other formulation only according to its directions. Work the product onto the scalp, rinse well, and avoid the eyes. Do not apply it more often than advised in the hope of speeding growth. Photographing the parting or affected area under similar light can help you track change. A clinician can check the scalp and discuss options such as treatment for infection, pattern loss, or another cause of shedding.

Arrange an assessment for a sudden change, smooth patches, scalp tenderness, heavy scale, pus, broken hairs, or eyebrow loss. Prompt review is especially useful when hair loss follows a tight hairstyle or when a scaly scalp patch affects a child or close contacts.

Ask whether the pattern suggests infection, inflammation, pattern loss, or shedding after a trigger; whether ketoconazole has a role; and what treatment targets the cause.
