Ketoconazole works against certain fungi and yeasts on the skin. A clinician may consider it for a condition with a defined fungal pattern, such as an itchy, scaly area or yeast-related inflammation. Acne, eczema, bacterial infection, and allergic irritation can appear similar but will not respond in the same way. The correct formulation and diagnosis matter, especially on the face, in skin folds, or near the eyes.

Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin only as directed. Wash your hands before and after use, avoid the eyes and mouth, and do not cover the area with a tight dressing unless instructed. Mild stinging can occur, but stop and ask for advice if there is marked burning, swelling, blistering, or worsening redness. Keep using it for the advised course rather than stopping as soon as the surface looks calmer, unless irritation requires you to stop.

Seek a review if the rash spreads, becomes painful, develops discharge, or shows no clear improvement with the advised plan. Urgent care is appropriate for facial swelling with breathing difficulty, severe eye symptoms, or a rapidly worsening rash with fever.
