What should you know about nitrofurantoin skin rash?

Nitrofurantoin can be followed by a medicine-related eruption, but a rash may also come from infection, contact with an irritant, heat, or a pre-existing condition. Note when the rash began relative to each dose, where it started, whether it is spreading, and whether there is itch, pain, fever, blistering, mouth soreness, or facial swelling. A drug rash can resemble other eruptions, so photographs and an examination are useful. Do not assume every rash is caused by the antibiotic.

Contact the prescriber or pharmacist promptly for advice about the next dose, especially if the rash began after starting nitrofurantoin. Do not restart leftover capsules or substitute another antibiotic yourself. Keep a list of all medicines, supplements, and recent products, and photograph the rash in good light. Use gentle skin care and avoid new fragranced products. If a clinician advises continuing or stopping treatment, follow that individual plan and record the reaction for future medical visits.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or rapidly developing widespread hives. Seek urgent assessment for blistering or peeling skin, painful skin, sores in the mouth or eyes, high fever, marked facial swelling, or feeling very unwell.
