What should you know about nipple skin thickening?

Repeated rubbing, dry skin, eczema, soaps, sweat, or an allergic reaction can make the skin feel rough, scaly, swollen, or leathery. Scratching may increase the thickness over time. Atopic dermatitis can affect the nipple and surrounding skin, sometimes with itching, redness, cracking, or oozing. Thickening on one side, a change in the nipple itself, a lump, bleeding, crusting, or discharge cannot be diagnosed by appearance alone and should be examined.

Pause fragranced washes, exfoliants, and new creams on the area. Rinse gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and use a plain fragrance-free moisturiser if the skin is dry. Choose soft, well-fitting clothing and avoid rubbing or picking. Take a clear photo and note when the change began, whether it is one-sided, and whether there is itching, pain, discharge, or a lump. Do not apply steroid, antibiotic, or antifungal treatment to the nipple without advice, especially if the diagnosis is uncertain.

Arrange a prompt appointment for a new change that persists, returns, or affects one nipple, particularly with crusting, bleeding, ulceration, nipple inversion, a lump, or discharge. Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading redness, marked warmth, severe pain, fever, or feeling unwell, because these can signal infection. A clinician may inspect the skin and breast, ask about medicines and irritants, and decide whether further testing is needed.
