What should you know about nipple scaling flaking and thickening?

Dryness, friction, contact allergy, and dermatitis may produce itch, redness, cracking, or a burning feeling. Psoriasis can create well-defined scaly areas, while seborrheic dermatitis may affect nearby skin. Fungal conditions such as ringworm or tinea versicolor can alter surface colour and scale, although the nipple area needs particular care when choosing treatment.

Appearance alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician may inspect both breasts and nearby skin, ask about breastfeeding, new products, medicines, pain, discharge, and changes in the breast, and arrange further assessment when the pattern is persistent or unusual.

Pause fragranced soaps, scrubs, deodorants, and new creams on the area. Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, wear breathable clothing, and avoid scratching or peeling flakes.
