Night fever on lip: what it can mean and what to do

A fever is a rise in body temperature linked to the immune system. A lip change may be caused by a local infection, irritation, an injury or a viral illness. A cold sore can begin with tingling before blisters appear, while redness, warmth, tenderness or spreading swelling can point to a skin infection such as Cellulitis. Fever can also occur with a wider illness such as Common Cold, COVID-19 or Chickenpox.

The lip symptom does not show which cause is responsible. Note whether the area is blistered, cracked, crusted, painful, itchy or draining, and whether the fever is measured or simply a feeling of being hot.

Check your temperature with a reliable thermometer and write down when it rises, how long it lasts and any medicines taken. Drink fluids regularly, rest, and choose soft foods if the lip is sore. Do not squeeze blisters or share cups, towels or lip products until the cause is clearer. Keep the area clean and avoid products that sting.

A clinician can examine the lip and ask about mouth sores, cough, breathing symptoms, recent travel, new medicines and contact with someone unwell. These details help distinguish a local problem from an illness affecting the whole body.

Seek urgent care if swelling spreads quickly, the tongue or throat becomes swollen, breathing or swallowing is difficult, you feel faint or confused, or the skin becomes very painful and rapidly red. Get prompt medical advice for a fever in a young baby, repeated fever, dehydration, a weakened immune system, or a lip wound that is not improving.
