Nickel food allergy rash: what to know

A nickel-related rash may be itchy, dry, red or inflamed, but appearance alone cannot identify its cause. The distribution can offer clues: a contact reaction tends to affect skin that touched the trigger, while a food-related reaction may occur away from that area and can involve hives or mouth symptoms.

Most people with food allergy notice symptoms soon after the responsible food, although timing is not enough to confirm a diagnosis. An itchy throat, facial swelling, vomiting or breathing change raises the level of concern. Write down what happened rather than assuming the rash identifies the food.

Take a clear photograph before applying a new cream, and record the meal, portion, onset, rash location and any accompanying symptoms. Avoid the suspected food until you have received personalised advice if reactions recur, but avoid removing many foods at once.
