What should you know about nickel allergy skin rash?

Nickel contact dermatitis develops where nickel-containing metal touches the skin, such as beneath jewellery, a belt buckle, a watch, a clothing fastener or a piercing. The reaction may be delayed, and the outline can follow the shape of the object. Itching is often prominent, with burning, roughness, cracks or weeping possible during a stronger flare. The rash may continue after exposure ends because the skin inflammation takes time to settle. A similar appearance can come from fragrance, cosmetics, eczema, infection or another metal, so a visual check cannot identify nickel by itself.

Stop contact with the suspected item, rinse gently, and protect the area from scratching and friction. Apply a plain moisturiser if the skin is intact, and avoid perfume or new products while the cause is being assessed. Keep a list of objects that touched the rash and how long symptoms lasted. A dermatologist may use patch testing to check nickel and other contact allergens. For significant inflammation, a clinician may prescribe a topical corticosteroid and explain the correct amount, timing and body area for use.

Arrange an appointment if the eruption is recurrent, extensive, persistent, or interfering with sleep or daily activities. Seek prompt care for severe pain, warmth, pus, fever, crusting or rapidly spreading redness. Get urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or throat, faintness or widespread hives.
